Waveland Area Insight

  • Living in Waveland for the past 19 years, I've been able to enjoy all that this city has to offer in beach activities. The Garfield Ladner fishing pier has permanent lighting for fishing all hours of the day and night. Running water allows fishermen to clean what they need right on the spot.

With the addition of the Waveland Lighthouse, restroom facilities are available to all beachgoers. Besides nice bathrooms, there are outside showers to wash off the sand before returning home. From the observation deck of the lighthouse, visitors can see the Mississippi Gulf Coast for miles which allows for some outstanding pictures.

Next to the pier, there are sand volleyball courts that are lighted until around 11:00 p.m. each night. The most recent addition to the Waveland Beach area is a parking bay and pavilion with picnic tables. You need to come early to get a spot because they go fast! Next time you're on the Gulf Coast, mark Waveland and its beaches as a destination spot to enjoy a day in the sun.

Are you a camper? Give Buccaneer a try. On the beach in Hancock County at Historic Jackson's Ridge, Buccaneer offers multiple full connection sites, primitive sites, hiking, biking trails, fishing, swimming, and a water park. Golf carts are allowed here too.

It's a quiet, relaxed place. They have a few more rules than other sites I've stayed at but overall they get a big check. If it's your first time here give yourself a couple of days to explore Waveland and the Silver Slipper.

It's not a secret that South Mississippians love Mardi Gras. The Krewe of Nereids has been hosting its annual Ball for 51 years this year. Amazing. On top of their flamboyant evening they host one of the largest Mardi Gras parades on the coast. The parade begins in Bay Saint Louis and travels down Highway 90 through Waveland. The crowds stretch both sides of the street for miles to attend. People even camp overnight! You won't want to miss the event this year!!

Some years ago I began working in Waveland. Although I spent 60+ hours a week in the area, I lived in a town deeper into Mississippi and my travel to and from work was the same every day - I never strayed from my path. I thought there wasn't anything in town not on the main corridor. Was I wrong!

I've since evolved my thinking about small towns to become a true explorer. Beyond the main highway are mom and pop restaurants, bars, parks, beautiful beaches, and more. If you find yourself in the area, try a Sno-Ball at Carribean Breeze, visit Roger's Sports Bar and Grill on Lobster Night for a surprise, or grab a pole and try many of the hidden fishing spots The locals are kind here, you're in for a treat!

Buccaneer State Park and Water Park is a favorite of locals and tourists alike. This park is rich in history, and offers many things for individuals, friends and families to do. The Park features a 4.5 acre water park and wave pool, a nature trail (great for birding), Jackson's Ridge Disc Golf, playground, and camp sites that actually over-look the Gulf of Mexico.
