Recently, our drive from Kentwood, LA, took us a back way to Gillsburg, MS. We drove miles and miles seeing mostly open pasture land and cattle. Houses were scattered here and there. If you were looking to be in the country, Gillsburg would make a nice home.

Gillsburg is obviously a community surrounded by Christian values. Their new and old Baptist churches stand side-by-side with a large sign that has the Ten Commandments. I would call this the bylaws of this community.

I was surprised to find no Dollar General; however, there is a hair salon. My memory of Gillsburg is from a long time ago when softball brought teenagers from far away to hang out at the local ball field. Once a year the whole community puts on a real Hallmark Christmas type parade. It rolls down the street and turns around and goes by again - just to make sure you see all the folks on both sides.

The one thing that really put Gillsburg on the map to be known across the USA, is a plane crash. In October 1977, the famous Lynryd Skynyrd Band crashed into the thick woods in Gillsburg. Yearly, you will find out of town folks hunting the site in memory of them. The site is owned by a private land owner and well hidden. Even the small community of Gillsburg has made headlines.
